Lions Narrowly Beaten By Spartans

Nottingham Lions 3 Sheffield Spartans 5

The Nottingham Lions’ hopes of avoiding the final relegation play-off spot took a blow at the NIC on Sunday night as the Sheffield Spartans took the two points.

Goals from Michael Rose (2) and Jack Clarkson were not enough to give the Lions a much needed victory, as the Spartans all-but ensured their place in the ENL Division 1 North next season.

"Two Goals" - Michael Rose.

Nick Manning got the Spartans off to a flying start with two goals in the first eight minutes before Rose pulled one back for the Lions.

Oliver Barron grabbed Sheffield’s third on the half-hour before Clarkson kept Nottingham in the hunt with forty seconds left in the second.

Rose looked like he had swung the game in the Lions’ favour with an equalising goal with less than a minute gone in the third but Luke Unwin got the Spartans back in front, before a uncharacteristic goalkeeping howler from Alan Levers gave Andy Turner a short-handed goal from his own defensive zone, to wrap-up the points for Sheffield.

Nottingham’s superior head-to-head record over the Coventry ENL Blaze currently sees them sitting one place above the relegation play-off spot despite being locked on points and games-played with their Midlands rivals.

The Lions now have three games remaining to avoid a play-off scenario, starting with their last away trip of the season, at Trafford Metros this Saturday (5.15pm Face-Off).

Don’t forget you can watch post-game interviews with Lions and Spartans’ players and staff on LionsTV – our very own online TV channel.

Sheffield (H) Preview

The next chapter in the Nottingham Lions’ battle to avoid the relegation places takes places at the National Ice Centre this Sunday (26th February – 7.15pm Face-Off).

They take-on fellow strugglers; Sheffield Spartans who sit one place and two points ahead of the Lions in the ENL Division 1 North standings.

Lions taking on the Spartans at the NIC back in September.

Nottingham, who already have the head-to-head advantage over fellow relegation rivals Coventry and Solihull will be looking to make it a triple, with a victory over a Spartans side who, like the Lions, have struggled for consistancy throughout the season.

Nottingham started their home campaign with a 5-3 win over Sheffield back in September before the Spartans claimed a 5-2 home victory in October. November saw the Lions leave Ice Sheffield triumphant with a 6-4  final score, having scored four unanswered goals in the final period.

Sheffield have the bonus of two games in hand over the Lions (one of which is away to Trafford on Saturday), so Matt Bradbury’s side will be giving it their all for a positive outcome.

Nicky Balchin should return after the knock which kept him out of the 2-0 win over Trafford Metros two weeks ago, whilst Gareth O’Flahtery, Ben Wood and Max Bennett should be in good form after Trent Uni’s win in the big Varsity game last Monday.

Matt Bradbury also faces a selection headache between the pipes with Richard Griffiths, Sam Gospel and Alan Levers all vying for a place and with the later two both claiming shut-outs in their last home appearances, it is hard to say who’ll get the nod this time around.

Lions In The Mix As Trent Triumph

No less that seven Nottingham Lions players were involved as Nottingham Trent University beat the University Of Nottingham 7-5 in a thrilling game, in front of a 7000 sell-out crowd at the Capital FM Arena last night.

Lion, Ben Wood opened the scoring for Trent with five minutes on the clock.

Trent went two goals up after ten minutes, then three unanswered Nottingham goals put them in the driving seat before a Trent equaliser late in the second period tied things up at 4-4 and set-up a tense final twenty minutes.

Gareth O'Flaherty celebrates after scoring Trent's game-winner.

Lions’ latest signing Jack Clarkson got Nottingham back in front with a great finish through a mass of bodies with fifteen minutes to go, before Trent took a stranglehold on the game scoring four-in-a-row, two of those, including the game winner were scored by Lions centre Gareth O’Flaherty.

Nottingham pulled a goal back with less than a minute remaining but it was too little-too late as Trent came away with the trophy and the bragging rights.

There was some consolation for Clarkson as he was named Nottingham’s Man of the Match and Gareth O’Flaherty was unlucky not to be named as Trent’s selection, just being pipped to the post by Will Weldon.

All the Lions involved thoughts’ now turn back to ENL matters with a home tie at the NIC with Sheffield Spartans this Sunday (7.15pm Face-Off).

Don’t forget we have special reduced student prices for our remaining three home games this season.
