Lions Triumph In The Dragons’ Den

Deeside Dragons 2 Nottingham Lions 4

Neither the icy road conditions nor the Deeside Dragons could prevent the Nottingham Lions extending their lead at the top of Division Two North on Sunday evening, as first place met second at Deeside Ice Arena.

With many games in the National Ice Hockey League falling prey to the wintry weather, the Lions decided to plough on through the snow and were rewarded for their endeavour with the two points after a hard fought win over their North Wales-based promotion rivals.

The first period found debutant netminder Alan Levers, a last-minute midweek signing from Sutton Sting, on fine form as Deeside looked to take the advantage early on but the 28 year-old custodian showed why coach Matt Bradbury has brought him back to his old club, pulling off a string of fine saves.

A fine performance on his return to the Lions saw Alan Levers pick up the Man of the Match award.

It wasn’t all one way traffic however, as David Clancy in the Dragons goal was also kept busy and was the first to have his net rippled on 16 minutes when Canadian forward Jose Leon coolly fired home after a quick breakout of the Lions’ zone.

Seconds later, Leon again found himself in a virtually identical situation but this time was denied by Clancy as Nottingham closed out a flowing, end-to-end period, a goal to the good.

The second period followed a similar pattern with Deeside piling on the pressure in the Lions’ zone but with Levers in such fine form, Nottingham seemed content to soak up the pressure and hit their hosts on the break.

Gareth O’Flaherty then doubled the Lions’ lead on the powerplay after 25 minutes and it was nearly three on the half-hour as Joe Wightman’s breakaway chance was closed out by a quick-thinking Clancy, who raced out of his crease to minimise the marksman’s options.

Tom King finally broke the Lions’ resolve moments later to keep the Dragons in the game heading into the final period.

Nottingham made the worst possible start to the third period, conceding an equaliser in the first minute, once again courtesy of the stick of Tom King.

The Dragons had their tails up and were well in the ascendancy when Jordan Bannon, along with a large section of the home support, thought he had put the Dragons ahead but his shot just crept wide of Levers’ right-hand post and could only worry the side-netting.

With eight minutes remaining, defenceman Jack Baveystock provided a sucker punch to the Welsh outfit as he popped up through a melee of bodies to flick the puck home from close range for his second goal of the season.

The points were sealed with just nine seconds left on the clock as the Dragons pulled Clancy for an extra attacker but their failure to win the vital face off proved to be their undoing as American import Luke Branin eased the puck into an empty net with just two seconds left.

LionsTV post-game interviews with Matt Bradbury, Gareth O’Flaherty and captain Luke Thomas will be available to view here from Monday evening.

The Lions will now be looking to maintain their 100% home record next Sunday (27th January), as promotion rivals Solihull Barons are the visitors to the National Ice Centre (7.15pm face off) in what is sure to be a fiercely contested Midlands derby game. Netminder Levers Returns To The Pride

The Nottingham Lions are delighted to announce the return of netminder Alan Levers to the club.

Alan with Lions’ GM Danny Harrison.

Alan has spent most of his senior career with the Lions, appearing at the National Ice Centre over ten seasons in total, between 1999 and 2012.

However, the 28 year-old custodian spent much of last season on the sidelines due to injury, featuring in just 9 games before moving on to local rivals Sutton Sting in the summer.

Having started in 9 games for the Sting in Division 1 North this season, unforeseen work commitments in his role at the National Ice Centre meant he was unable to commit to the Sheffield-based side for the remainder of the season.

Knowing the door was always open for a return to the Lions, the former GB Under 18 and Under 20 international was able to slot right into Matt Bradbury’s squad after the Lions’ regular netminder Sam Gospel was laid-up with an injury last week.

Bradbury was clearly pleased to see the return of Alan, saying,

“It’s great to welcome Alan back under the circumstances and as ever Alan has conducted himself liked true professional – when someone of his quality becomes available you can’t turn your nose up to it.”

“We are really looking forward to seeing him back in black and gold and he will really help us at this crucial stage of the campaign.”

The Derby-born keeper will make his debut in today’s trip to second-placed Deeside Dragons where he is sure to face a stern test of his abilities against the league’s current top goalscorers.

Injury Hit Lions Have Difficult Weekend

The Nottingham Lions sick and injury list is getting on the verge of an epidemic, last weekends games saw the largest list of players unable to dress for the Lions in recent memory, some of the players missing were:

Nottingham Lions 2 Telford Titans 7 (16/10/11)

Two goals and a man of the match performance from Nick Whyatt weren’t enough for the Nottingham Lions as they went down 7-2 at the National Ice Centre last Sunday night.

Head Coach Matt Bradbury commented “As a team we switch off at key moments and a lot of that is down to inexperience and that’s when teams like Telford capitalise and take their chances. At times during the game we had Telford on the back foot and outshot them 33-30, whilst we didn’t pick up points it’s key that we keep that fighting spirit. ”

“Telford are a good outfit and should be challenging for honours this season – they are well drilled and have many years of experience”

We face difficult back to back away games this weekend facing Sheffield Spartans (Saturday) and Solihull Barons (Sunday).

“It’s vital that we pick up points this weekend as we are too close to the bottom of the league for comfort. We need players to stop feeling sorry for themselves get their heads down, roll up their sleeves and get on with it.”

Lions netminder Alan Levers will be out for two weeks with an injured knee after a collision with a Telford player during the Lions 7-2 defeat to Telford.
