Lions Go Back To School Ahead Of Playoff Weekend

Nottingham Lions staff and players are heading back to the classroom over the next two weeks in the run up to their big relegation playoff final second leg clash with local rivals, Sutton Sting.

The Lions with pupils from Blue Bell Hill Primary School

Head Coach Matt Bradbury along with players Michael Rose, Callum Worthington-Evans and Ryan Rathbone went to visit pupils at Blue Bell Hill Primary School in St. Anns on Tuesday and set a up a mini hockey session with the kids before handing out vouchers to every pupil allowing them to gain discounted entry to the big Nottinghamshire derby game at the National Ice Centre on Sunday 13th May.

Bradbury said; “It’s a wonderful opportunity to raise the profile of not only the playoff game but also to pass on the love of ice hockey onto these young children.”

“A lot of these youngsters will have never seen ice hockey before and its an opportunity to offer a schools ticket offer for them and their famillies to get along and see some top sport action in the National Ice Centre.”

Right Winger Michael Rose was eager to promote the game to the kids and said “I’ve played ice hockey from an early age, and have really made many friends in Nottingham and across the country.  Hockey is such a great team sport and I can honestly say I’ve loved every minute of it.”

Callum Worthington-Evans was also keen to spread the hockey gospel, saying; “I coach beginner ice hockey players at the National Ice Centre from four to seven years of age on the squirts programme and can recommend that any children or parents that may be interested in trying ice hockey to get in touch and give it a go, especially while the kids are young!”

Next week, the Lions will be visting Willow Farm School in Gedling and Haddon Primary School in Carlton to meet the pupils to hand out more vouchers.

With plenty at stake for both sides this game promises to be a cracker and the Lions organisation are pulling out all the stops to ensure there is a bumper crowd inside the Capital FM Arena to cheer on the Lions come faceoff at 5pm.

Telford (A) & Trafford (H) Preview

The Nottingham Lions last two-game-weekend of the regular season sees them travel to Telford on Saturday to take on the Titans at Telford Ice Rink (5.30pm Face-Off) before returning home to entertain the Trafford Metros at the National Ice Centre on the Sunday (12th February – 7.15pm).

The Lions will be looking to build on last weekend’s impressive 4-0 win over Coventry and move further away from the relegation places in the ENL Division 1 North, while their respective opposition both sit in mid-table and are currently chasing a play-off position.

Lions taking on the Metros back in September

The Lions have had mixed fortunes against the Titans this season, losing both home ties, however they will gain confidence from their valuable 3-2 victory in Telford back in December .

Nottingham have yet to beat Trafford this season with the Metros coming out on top so far in both meetings. But the two sides have not met since back in September and with the Lions adding a number of new players to their ranks over the festive period they should prove to be a different proposition this time around.

Head Coach Matt Bradbury had a quick chat to LionsTV last weekend about this weekend’s games, saying;

“They’re both sold teams and solid units, it’s going to be tough.”

“We didn’t expect anything last time we went to Telford and we came out of that one with a victory – It just shows you anything can happen on any given night – I think that’s the great thing about the league this year.”

“If we work as hard as we can, pull together and put a bit of a run together we might not even be talking relegation – we might be talking playoffs!”

“Everyone’s enjoying themselves and eveyone’s battling away hard for the team.”

Lions Extinguish Blaze

Nottingham Lions 4 Coventry ENL Blaze 0

Nottingham Lions claimed their first points of the year and their first clean-sheet of the season with a hard fought victory over fellow relegation rivals Coventry ENL Blaze at the NIC on Sunday night.

An outstanding 42-shot shutout from Lions netminder Sam Gospel plus goals from Joe Wightman (2), Ciaran Quinn and Gareth O’Flaherty helped the Lions to leap-frog their opponents in the table, climbing out of the relegation places.

The Blaze dominated large parts of the play for the first 40 minutes but failed to penetrate Gospel’s goal. However, the Lions’ attack continued to look dangerous and Wightman broke through with seconds left in the first.

2 Goals - Joe Wightman

Gareth Owen came the closest for the visitors hitting the metalwork early in the second before Wightman grabbed his second on the powerplay with five minutes left in the period.

Into the third, man of the match Quinn was on target, then a short-handed effort from O’Flaherty put the game beyond the Blaze’s reach and a lengthy hold-up after a line brawl with 30 seconds left on the clock, only held up the inevitable for Coventry.

Short-Handed Goal - Gareth O'Flaherty

The victory now means the Lions have the head-to-head advantage over the Blaze by two goals and will finish above their midlands rivals should the teams be level on points at the end of the season.

LionsTV interviews with Matt Bradbury, Ciaran Quinn and Coventry Blaze’s Craig Newton and Matt Selby are now available to view on our online TV channel.

Telford Titans await the Lions at Telford Ice Rink next Saturday (5.30pm) before they return home to take on the Trafford Metros at the NIC on Sunday (7.15pm).

Nottingham Lions 6 – Solihull Barons 2 (30/10/11)

Lions found themselves an early goal down however Joe Wightman responded to be level on terms with Chris Colegate getting the go ahead goal. There was no looking back for the Lions who dominated the proceedings and finished their chances well.

Head Coach Matt Bradbury said after the match “It’s been a long time coming but it is no more than the team and back room staff deserve, the commitment and professionalism of all involved has been exemplary”

Against Solihull Lions welcomed back key players that have been unavailable and carrying injuries. Lions have a young team and they are learning each week what it takes to compete at this level and this is only another step on our journey this season. Marcus Maynard had a solid night on defence and our 3 units of forwards really clicked and put the puck in the back of the net which was encouraging.

This Sunday Lions play Whitley Warriors at home at the NIC for a 7.15pm face off. With the Panthers playing at 4pm it would be fantastic if the Panthers season ticket holders could stay after and support the boys – it’s only £3.00 with your season ticket with all funds going back in to support the team.
